Funny Story is Emily Henrys latest contemporary Rom Com staring main characters Daphne and Miles. Two people who end up living together after their respective partners, Peter and Petra, leave them to be in a relationship together. Henry once again delivers another unputdownable story that will have you laugh and smile, and teach you of some valuable life lessons along the way. The three most notable being: the importance of leading through actions and not just words, knowing your worth instead of relying on someone to convince you of it, and a reminder to step out of your comfort zone more often.
One thing about me is that I will always finish an Emily Henry novel in 3 days max. Theres something about Emilys writing and story telling that makes each book extremely fun to read. When it comes to this storyline in particular, some things I didn’t love was when the characters used avoidant conflict resolution styles. The reason being is that my resolution style is the complete opposite, so I found those moments to be frustrating. I also feel like the ending was a bit rushed and could’ve been better developed and paced out if the book was longer. I don’t think these things take away from the story itself though so I still enjoyed and recommend it.
I overall did like this book, but i would say it’s my second third favorite of hers. For context, number one for me is Book Lovers as I absolutely loved it. As a hopeless romantic, I can always count on her novels to bring the perfect balance of sappiness and adulthood relatability. I hope everyone reading gets the meet-cute they deserve (if you haven’t already ;).
P.S. I will personally be first in line on opening day at every Emily Henry movie adaptation. Can’t wait for her next release!
